In an average year, SFID receives approximately 30% of its water supply from rainfall collected in Lake Hodges, which is owned by the city of San Diego. During an inspection earlier this year, the City identified areas in the dam wall that required repair and needed to be sealed. To access these areas, the water level of the reservoir was lowered by approximately 18 feet. SFID assisted in the lowering of the lake level. The reservoir has been closed to recreation as a result of these repairs, and this is why the lake is at such a low level, which can be seen when driving past. The original repair work was scheduled to be completed in the fall.
Additional repairs have been identified by the City, and a member of the City's engineering staff provided an update to the SFID Board of Directors at the September 15 meeting. The presentation can be found here. City of San Diego presentation
